(leader : Camille J. Bogaert ) : conductor, Ernest W. Goss , with Irene Kohler (piano)
From the Pavilion, Torquay
Grieg wrote the Piano Concerto in A minor in the first year of his marriage, and it speaks eloquently of his happiness. He played the solo part himself on his first appearance in London in 1888 at a concert of the Royal Philharmonic Society. The Concerto is scored with the utmost delicacy and vividness of colour, and the piano part is brilliant and effective without being merely showy.

Violin Concerto No. 3, in B minor played by Laurance Turner and the BBC Northern Orchestra, conducted by Leslie Heward
A fluent composer and excellent crafts-man, Saint-Saens gave his attention to almost every form of composition. Until quite recently his five piano concertos and three violin concertos were frequently heard in England. The Violin Concerto No. 3, in B minor, is a melodious and elegantly constructed work, and is most effectively written for the solo instrument. It was first performed by Sarasate in 1881.
