Thomas Wood , author, traveller, composer, and folk-song collector, is surely one of the most versatile of living musicians. When it is realised that throughout his life he has had to fight threatened blindness, it is all the more amazing" that he has attained so much success in such a diversity of subjects. The son of a master mariner, he was chiefly inspired by the sea : among his most important compositions are the choral works Forty Singing Seamen, Master Manners, and Merchantmen, although he is probably better known for his part songs.
