Eugene Morgan, inventor of a 'horseless carriage', is on the way up but the Magnificent Ambersons. undisputed leaders of society, are on the way down, though they do not realise it. Young George, a typical Amber-son, spoilt, obstinate, and proud, refuses to recognise the signs of the times and wrecks his mother's happiness and almost ruins his own before he is humbled.
