Lucy sets out to raise money to buy her son Jerry a bicycle for his birthday. After a slow start she makes progress by leaps and bounds.

That timeless and irrepressible red-head Lucille Ball of "I Love Lucy" fame, arrives tonight in a brand-new comedy series, and with a brand-new character. In The Lucy Show she is Lucy Carmichael, a widow trying to bring up her two children with the sole aid of her not-too-predictable flat-mate Vivian, who is also a widow!
Lucille says of the series that it is based on the proposition that a mother who has to act as father as well can be as funny as father, in a frilly apron, trying to do mother's job. In the first episode, for example, she finds herself short of the price of a bicycle. With no Dad to foot the bill, she takes a temporary job as a secretary, despite the fact that she hasn't set finger to typewriter for twenty years.
Her return to the business whirl is not an unqualified success. In fact, when on her first day she is sent out of the office on a simple errand, she returns garbed in a kangaroo skin. A little odd perhaps - but this sort of thing happens to Lucy all the time.
