Jethroe Ames, the Springfield Fair impresario, is very much taken by Corky's newest pet, a hippopotamus named Hortense, and invites Big Tim Champion to bring his circus to the fair. This makes the owner of a rival circus very jealous, and to put an end to Hortense he persuades the Sheriff's Deputy that she has eaten his assistant.
