Cracker, an ageing playboy, had rented the flat next to his own for a Miss Sabry, a young lady whose friendship with him was coming to an end. The story opened one evening when Clare, Cracker's grown-up daughter, and Paul, his stepson, were both mysteriously summoned to meet their father in Miss Sabry's flat. Cracker's belongings were planted about the place to make it look as if he lived there. After Paul and Clare left with the mystery still unsolved, a note was delivered demanding £5,000 from Cracker if he wanted to see Miss Sabry alive again. The affair, it seemed, was only beginning.
