Twenty years ago the Spanish Civil War had the doubtful distinction of being one of the first wars to be covered extensively by cameramen. This programme shows the suffering, the desolation and the hunger of a country divided against itself through two-and-a-half years of bitter fighting. It recalls the headline words of the late thirties-non-intervention-Guernica-nationalists-insurgents-the International Brigade.
The film is the story of the Civil War that preceded the World War of 1939, when the desolation and destruction became international.
Produced by the Columbia Broadcasting System in the series 'The Twentieth Century'
