The action of the play takes place in the Cathedral City of Llandaff in the year 1550.

The year 1955 was the fourth centenary of the martyrdom of Rawlins White, the Cardiff fisherman who, rather than deny his Protestant beliefs, was burnt at the Stake. This event is the theme of The Chariot of Fire.

Rawlins White was condemned by Anthony Kitchen, Bishop of Llandaff, who was forced to this tragic deed by the religious and political pressure of the day. Much of the impact of the play arises from the characters of these two men and the relationships into which they are driven by circumstances.
The author, Jon Manchip White, is a young Cardiffian who claims descent from Rawlins White. He has been a member of the BBC television staff, a Foreign Office official, and is now a scriptwriter for a London film company.
