Scene: The school and the town of Villette

Lucy is sent by Madame Beck to the Rue des Mages, where she encounters a curious trio of Paul's dependants, and hears strange tales of his past. Subtle and ruthless, the conspiracy takes shape. One morning the Professor does not appear to give his lesson, and Madame Beck announces that Paul Emanuel will be seen no more in the Rue Fossette.
