Thousands of aspiring writers long for the day when their first novel is published.
'First Novel' tells the story of one such writer, Tom Richmond.
Written and produced by Leonard Cottrell.

For his first television documentary Leonard Cottrell has chosen a subject very different from the historical and archaeological subjects with which he has mainly been associated in his fourteen years of sound radio. First Novel is based on his own experiences as a writer, as well as those of a number of novelist friends, and sets out to describe the processes through which a novel must pass from leaving the author's pen to arriving on the bookstall. It gives an idea of the mechanics of publishing, and brings to light especially the intangible reasons which prompt a novelist to write.
