Pierre Fournier was born in Paris in 1906 and graduated with the highest distinction from the Paris National Conservatoire where from 1941 to 1949 he was professor of the master class In the violoncello. He has travelled widely In Europe. North and South America. South Africa and the Far East and has an international reputation as one of the outstanding cellists of today He also has a second reputation In the field of chamber music and with Solomon and the violinist Francescatti formed the Edinburgh Festival trio last year. Fournier's immense repertoire Includes concertos, sonatas and classical pieces: among contemporary composers Martinu and Poulenc have dedicated works to him.
