This year it is Britain's turn to be at home to France in the annual athletics match between the two countries. Since the match became Great Britain v. France in 1933, Great Britain has won ten times and prior to that, when the match was between England and France, England had won six times. France has won five contests in all.

Solomon Hyams is not averse to a shady deal. As he puts it: "I'm not afraid of anything if there's money in it" and there is money - big money - in this deal with the sailor who brings something more interesting to dispose of than old clothes and tawdry knick-knacks which festoon the crowded pawnshop. Hyams is aware that he is taking a risk; he is aware even that the stakes are higher than usual. But just how high they are he, and the viewer, will not discover until this grim little piece winds chillingly to its close.
