Outside broadcast cameras visit a Nottingham factory to show craftsmen making cricket bats by methods that have hardly changed in seventy years.
Godfrey Baseley tells the story from willow tree to finished bat, and Peter Cranmer asks a famous cricketer what the expert looks for.

A serial play in six episodes by Donald Wilson.
[Starring] Betty Paul
The scene is a film studio where the work on hand is called "The Patriot" starring Yvonne Jouvert, a charming and highly professional actress, and Stirling Carr, less charming and less professional. Carr is in fact a rather considerable cad and a trial to Jamieson White, the director, Clive Dunstan, once a star himself, Ruth Andrews, the continuity girl, and Pete Marshall, the assistant director. Amid the chaos - organised, perhaps, but bewildering nevertheless - on the set, anything can happen, and something sensational does.
