When Lucy came to see her aunt, house-keeper to Lady Gresham, she was fascinated by the row of Gresham portraits in the music room, and by an old violin with a silver swan painted on its back. Each portrait had a story to tell in connection with the violin, and Lucy has been taken through four hundred years of history: seeing how the violin was given to the Greshams in the time of Queen Mary; how a Royalist Gresham was won over to Cromwell's cause and became 'Noli's fiddler'; how the violin saved an eighteenth-century Gresham from being press-ganged; how it was found in Vienna in 1850 after being lost for thirty years. In this episode the date is 1916.

Outside broadcast cameras visit a famous Birmingham company which, with the most modern plant of its kind in the world, is making A Motor Car a Minute.

In this plant four continually moving assembly lines stretch the full length of an 800-foot building. Down the lines complete wheel assemblies, power units, and bodies are supplied to the waiting chassis - and at the same moment at the other end of the line an engine leaps into life and a gleaming new car is driven away. All the way along the line men wait with tools at the ready to fix components and tighten nuts as the chassis passes by. This plant can produce 1,600 variations of body styles, colours, fittings, and steering positions.
