Have you ever tried to estimate how many pipe organs there are installed in various locations around the world, as well as all the instruments to be found in churches and cathedrals?  There are also town hall and concert hall instruments, lots of theatre organs, of course, and quite a number in private residences. It would certainly be interesting to know but I don't suppose we're ever likely to find out. We do know it would take us a fair old time to work our way round them all but we'll carry on trying week by week and it's a few of this country's finest church and town hall instruments which provide our music this evening. 

We'll hear from, amongst others, a magnificent example of the pipe organ builders' craft at Bath Abbey; the wonderfully restored Hill organ at Birmingham Town Hall; and listen to one of the oldest instruments still being played which is currently residing in St Giles in the Fields in London.

Kwame Kwei-Armah tells us the story of playwright Thomas "Tennessee" Williams, exploring the creative influence of his childhood home.

Tennessee Williams was born in Columbus, Mississippi, in 1911 and spent a great deal of his childhood in Clarksdale, living in the church rectory with his grandparents, mother and sister, while his travelling salesman father was largely absent.

The rich influences of his religious upbringing in the Deep South have all influenced his plays. Many refer to actual places in Coahoma County and some of his most famous characters - Blanche, Brick, Baby Doll, Stella and Amanda Wingfield - are named after real life Clarksdale residents. 

The Annual Mississippi Delta Tennessee Williams Festival was established in 1993 to celebrate both his talent and the cultural heritage immortalized in dramas like The Glass Menagerie, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Streetcar Named Desire and Orpheus Descending. The Clarksdale festival is held in mid-October and plays are performed on porches and in venues, offering an authentic backdrop to the action.

Contributors include residents of Clarksdale; aficionados of Tennessee Williams' work; the American musician Charlie Musselwhite; and some of the actors who have taken on his characters, including Brenda Blethyn.

Actor Kwame Kwei-Armah explores the social, religious and cultural influences behind the great works of writer Tennessee Williams (1911-83), forging direct links between his Clarksdale, Mississippi, upbringing and surroundings, and situations and characters in many of his acclaimed dramas such as The Glass Menagerie (1944), A Streetcar Named Desire (1947), Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1955) and Orpheus Descending (1957). Contributors include Clarksdale residents, US musician

It's also the year that John Tobler spoke to Debbie Harry and Chris Stein just before Blondie broke in the UK with the release of Denis. We replay uncut extracts from an interview that was broadcast on Radio 1's Rock On show on November 5 1977.
