Soweto Kinch begins a four-part journey of discovery in Harlem, a few square miles in northern Manhattan which have given the world great musical riches.
He hears from Pulitzer Prize winning novelist David Levering Lewis (author of "When Harlem Was In Vogue") about the origins of the area and visits the site of the "Tree of Hope" where superstitious musicians have touched the bark to help launch their careers.
We hear about the unique Harlem Stride style of piano jazz; visit speakeasies and the site of the famous Lincoln Theatre (which is now an Episcopalian church); and journey to Sugar Hill, the home of the Harlem Renaissance movement which saw intellectuals produce some of the area's richest writing, poetry and painting.

Musician Soweto Kinch takes a four-part journey of discovery in Harlem, where a few square miles in northern Manhattan have given the world great musical riches

New series. 1/4. British saxophonist, composer and rapper Soweto Kinch explores the musical heritage of the northern Manhattan district known as Harlem. He visits the sites that in the 1920s and 30s made it a hotbed of jazz and black culture, including the former Lincoln Theater (now an Episcopalian church) and Sugar Hill , then a neighbourhood of wealthy African Americans and the base of the Harlem Renaissance for writers, thinkers and artists. 
Kinch talks to Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist David Levering Lewis , author of When Harlem Was in Vogue (1981) and Pulitzer Prize-winning works on the life of Sugar  Hill resident and civil rights activist and intellectual WEB Du Bois.
