Folk, roots and acoustic-based music, with featured Texans Tom Russell , Michelle Shocked and Nanci Griffith to coincide with the South by Southwest Music Festival, held this week in Austin, Texas.
4/6. Soul singer Beverley Knight showcases top acts from the world of gospel music, with interviews, featured choirs, up-and-coming UK talent, live performances and tributes to pioneers of the genre. This edition features Ruby Turner , who cites her gospel influences and favourite tracks, and Ira Tucker , who discusses the role of quartets in gospel.
2/4. Paul Sexton profiles Arkansas-born singer/songwriter and pastor Al Green, whose music bridges the gap between gospel and soul like perhaps no other popular performer. This instalment features input from producer Willie Mitchell - who helped to create Green's distinctive 70s sound - musician Howard Grimes and Robin Gibb of the Bee Gees, whose US number one How Can You Mend a Broken Heart was famously reinterpreted by Green.
