Russell Davies pays tribute to clarinettist and big-band giant Artie Shaw (born Arthur Arshawsky), who died in December, aged 94. Inspired by modernist classical composers and what were then known as "race" recordings (i.e. jazz), Shaw forged a rich sound that rivalled Benny Goodman's in popularity, producing two of the swing era's biggest hits - a hypnotic rendering of Cole Porter's Begin the Beguine (1938) and, inspired by a stay in Mexico, Frenesi (13 weeks at number one in 1940/41) - and a version of Star Dust (1941) that topped a 1956 Billboard poll of disc-jockey's all-time favourite records. An intense and unconventional industry star, Shaw had interests well beyond his craft. He retired in 1954 at the age of 44, convinced that he'd exhausted his instrument.
