Sammy Cahn: the man who wrote the words for Frank Sinatra - and for Bing Crosby, and for Peggy Lee, and for...

The Sammy Cahn Story 10.00pm R2
This new series represents the coming together of two of the most prolific people in the wide world of broadcasting and entertainment: the lyricist Sammy Cahn and the presenter Michael Freedland, who churns out series for Radio 2 at an astonishing rate. And highly entertaining they tend to be, as with this trawl through Cahn's astonishing career. Not only did he write enough material for Frank Sinatra alone to fill a dozen albums, he also launched the career of Doris Day and wrote for every top singer of the 20th century, from Bing Crosby to Julie Andrews. He became a surprise hit in Britain via several colourful appearances on Michael Parkinson's chat show, extracts from which are used in this series. But it's the lyrics for songs such as Come Fly with Me that make the name Sammy Cahn synonymous with modern popular music.
