Presenter Charlie Gillett, author of the 1970 book on which the title of this eight-part series is based, explores the ways that unique combinations of instruments, voices and rhythms have defined the pop, rock and soul sound of individual cities - like Detroit, Nashville, New York and Memphis, as well as Johannesburg and Havana. Featured in the series are Edwin Starr, Sam Phillips, Emmylou Harris and Richard Gottehrer.
