8 June 1948 was the symbolic starting point for the postwar immigration from the Caribbean, when the SS Empire Windrush left Kingston, Jamaica, with nearly 500 passengers on board who were searching for a new life in the "mother country". Many more came after that, setting out for a place where they thought the streets were paved with gold. The programme talks to West Indians from all parts of Britain about their first impressions and how they settled into a new way of life. With musical memories from calypso to rock 'n' roll. Presented by Mona Hammond , who plays Blossom in EastEnders.
