A Tenor Sang
Another chance to hear the three-part series in which presenter Robin Gregory pays tribute to three of the great tenors of this century. 1: Giuseppi di Stefano The singer's first recordings were paid for by a wealthy Russian lady, after he was heard singing in a refugee camp in Switzerland where he had fled to escape American and British forces.
He soon took La Scala, Rome Opera and the Metropolitan by storm, and went on to seal his fame with a parade of operatic recordings with Maria Callas.
By the 1950s his penchant for good food, fast cars and gambling had taken its toll, but he survived to sing on Callas's farewell tour, and has given master classes this year at Covent Garden.
