Mary Ellis : I had a talent for drawing and my parents thought I was going to be a painter. Then mother made the mistake of taking me to the Opera. It was Madam Butterfly - I had heard nothing but good music and met good musicians and was taken not only to the Opera but occasionally tQ a lighter piece such as the Arcadians or Fledermaus.'
