Donald Macleod is joined by Karen Henson to examine the impact of the Theatre-Lyrique, whose repertoire came into direct competition with the long-established Opera-Comique.

The genesis of Paris's Théâtre-Lyrique came from a group of like-minded composers and dramatists including Berlioz, Adolphe Adam and Ambroise Thomas. They petitioned the authorities to create a third opera house specifically dedicated to staging works of lesser known composers. When it finally became a reality, its repertoire came into direct competition with the long established Opéra-Comique. With Donald Macleod and guest Karen Henson.

Following the restrained beauty of Dvorak's poetic Legends, the orchestra is joined by one of America's finest pianists, Garrick Ohlsson, for a rare performance of Martinu's Fourth Concerto Incantation, with its combination of dreamy lyricism and driving energy. Ohlsson himself calls it 'a vigorous emotional rollercoaster'.

It's just over 400 years since the publication of the first modern European story of a trip to the moon - astronomer Johannes Kepler's astonishing science fiction novella Somnium (The Dream), written in the summer of 1609 in Prague. Kepler had no rockets in his dream world - he had to call on demons to overcome the immense forces of interplanetary travel, encouraging passengers to arrange their limbs carefully so they weren't ripped apart at lift off! He didn't choose Cape Canaveral but Iceland for his moon base, inspired by stories of volcanoes and lost souls. He imagined a moon world full of huge, fast-growing serpent-like creatures, but he wasn't writing the Renaissance equivalent of a B-Movie! 

In 1609 Kepler was at the height of his powers, publishing his laws of planetary motion which would help take us to the moon. But he was also man with dangerous ideas. Just like Galileo, Kepler supported the new astronomy which put the Sun at the centre of the solar system, instead of a static Earth. Kepler's story was a mind-blowing thought experiment, to shift the reader's frame of reference to the Moon, so they could see that Earth never stood still. But unlike Galileo, it wasn't his own life he endangered with his ideas - it was his mother's. Bad tempered old herbalist Katharina Kepler was far too much like the Icelandic demon summoner and space-travel specialist of the story - Fiolxhilde with her astronomer son. When a neighbourhood quarrel left Katharina accused of witchcraft, people turned to manuscript copies of the Somnium and thought 'Aha! See, even her own son says so!' A horrified Kepler rushed to her rescue. Did he get there in time?

On the panel in front of an audience at the Sage Gateshead are writer and journalist Beatrix Campbell, assistant bishop of Newcastle Paul Richardson, Roger Olley of Fathers Plus and Rabbi the Baroness Julia Neuberger as they argue over the place of men in today's and tomorrow's world.

The jobs that defined men are disappearing, the opposite sex trounces them in exams and there is speculation that men will not even need be needed for reproduction in the future. With primary school teaching being an overwhelmingly female vocation and the rise in the number of single parent families, many boys are growing up without significant male role models. And the current debate over paternity leave and paternity rights suggests that society is confused about what it means to be a modern father. Some scientists even speculate that one day we may not need men for reproduction.

So have men failed to move with the times - or does modern society undermine them at its peril?
