The outbreak of war in 1914 affected Elgar deeply. At first, he wrote little music, but he was eventually persuaded to contribute to concerts raising money for various war funds. In the second of eight programmes, Malcolm Ruthven introduces the recordings of this music made by the Gramophone Company.
