During the Far Eastern conflict of 1941-45, the cause of Chiang Kai-shek's China was a popular one in Britain as well as in the USA, and officials in London, as in Washington, hoped to see a stable and unified China emerge from the war. Yet from Roosevelt downwards, many Americans were convinced that Britain's attitudes and policies towards China were completely at variance with their own.
