Throughout an operatic career that spanned more than 50 years (from 1839 to 1893) Verdi developed virtually single-handed an operatic language in which the drama is carried by, yet gives form to, the melody. His music embodies human emotion to an extent achieved by few other theatre composers. This week's programmes present a selection of music from his early operas as well as extended excerpts from La Traviata, Simon Boccanegra and Falstaff.
Today: music from Oberto, Nabucco, I Lombardi and Ernani including the voices of TITO GOBBI, ELENA SULIOTIS, SYLVIA SASS, CARLO BERGONZI and LEONTYNE PRICE: records

Empires in Asia
For many Americans, including Roosevelt, Britain's Empire in Asia was something to be, not preserved, but dismembered.
First of 28 programmes showing the pervasive influence of Plainsong on the development of European music.
Devised and introduced by Basil Lam It is all too easy to conceive of Plainsong purely as a lingering relic of medieval church music. Basil Lam argues that, far from this being the case, the ascendancy of Western music was built on the perfecting of the style of Gregorian chant, and that. quite apart from its great historical significance, it can appeal as pure music in the same way as later examples of the art.
The first programme includes chants for Holy Week and the Feast of Christmas sung by the MEN OF WESTMINSTER CATHEDRAL CHOIR, directed by COLIN MAWBY (Repeated: Man 13 December, morning; 19 Dec)
SYLVIA ROSENBERG (violin) MICHAEL ISADOR (piano)
