Don Carlos
This, the longest and arguably the grandest of Verdi's grand operas, was first performed in Paris on 11 March 1867. For 18 years after that the composer continued to revise it.
Andrew Porter has recently found in Paris not only a quantity of music which was cut before the Paris premiere but also a dossier of correspondence about the reworking of the opera over all those years.
