Michael KITSON of the Courtauld Institute looks at the way Ruskin's writings affected English taste in the arts and in travel abroad, in particular to the Continent. Like the other figures in this series, Ruskin was a considerable social thinker, but perhaps no other English critic has had such an influence on the way we look at paintings and sculpture.
