5: Darwin and the ' Origin of Species '
JOHN BURROW of Sussex University talks about Darwin's most famous work and the inferences drawn from it by sociologists and political theorists. He contrasts Darwin's original approach to natural history, rather like that of a vicarage botanist, with some of the more sinister political uses to which debased versions of his theories of evolution and natural selection were later put.
