Few careers in English politics have been so full of strange turns as that of the first Earl of Shaftesbury. ' Little Sincerity ' was Charles It's nickname for him: 'Lord Shiftsbury' was one of many others he bore. Professor Woolrych considers a new biography of Shaftesbury by K. H. D. Haley.

BRIAN LARGE has done a good deal of research both in Czechoslovakia and France into Martinu's life and work, and tonight tries to form some assessment of his stature.
He argues that the operas, choral works, and symphonies represent him at his best, and that the chamber music which is more often heard in this country shows a less comprehensive side of his personality. followed by an interlude at 10.55
