The record producers arrived at about the same time as rock music, the technical developments of the late 40s and 50s allowing room for the first time for a genuine creative approach to the making of recorded music.
In documenting for the first time the careers of some of the most influential personalities in popular music, Radio 1 looks at the work of 13 producers, beginning with the 'grandaddy' of them all, Tom Dowd.
Dowd launched himself into the recording industry in 1947 as an engineer, eventually spending more than 25 years as an engineer and producer with Atlantic
Records, where he worked with Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, Cream, the Allman Brothers and Eric Clapton. Other outstanding production credits include
Rod Stewart, Stephen Stills and Lynyrd Skynryd as highlights of an active career that continues successfully to this day.
