Brookfield's Christmas tree's looking great, especially with the Santa and snowman decoration Ben and Josh made with Heather. The beautiful tree and a wonderful afternoon leaves Ruth feeling sentimental as she compares their life to this time last year. David agrees they've come through stronger than ever.

Alan's never seen St Stephen's look so lovely and he knows Amy and Mabel are really looking forward to hearing the gospel choir. Joe's still moaning about giving Lynda the mistletoe and holly for free. He at least expects free tickets for the concert.

It's a full house and Alan can't help feeling it would have been easier to fit everyone in if the church had chairs. Bert however has told David that it's easier to squeeze more into the pews. 

Everyone agrees the evening is a great success. The choir seem to have enjoyed it too; so much so that they strike up an inpromptu encore at The Bull. Joe takes a cap round but Lynda's not convinced he's collecting in aid of the choir. Lynda insists on taking the money to put behind the bar - assuring Joe that she'll tell the choir it was his idea.

That is why hand disease and injury can be so disabling. In this programme Barbara Myers and hand surgeon Mr Rupert Eckersley, from the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, take callers' questions.

Many disorders and injuries of the hand can be treated with hand therapies like splinting, wound care, physiotherapy and occupational therapy. And these therapies remain crucial when surgery is necessary.

Jim apologises for forcing his strong anti-religious views on Daniel and claims to have profound respect for Shula's faith. He's grateful to Shula for taking him to the fracture clinic and is still sorry for giving away her casserole. He insists on making a pot of tea, refusing to take no for an answer, but it proves to be too much when he tries to carry it to the table. Before Shula can help, the teapot is in pieces on the floor. 

Kathy's back at Lower Loxley. Elizabeth wants to do everything she can to make things easier for her but all Kathy wants Elizabeth to do is keep out of her way. When Elizabeth insists they need to find a way to make it work, Kathy rushes out. She calls Kenton to tell him he was right. She can't do it and she's coming home.

Melvyn Bragg and guests talk about blood, black bile, yellow bile and phlegm. These are the four humours, a theory of disease and health that is among the most influential ideas aver conceived. According to an 11th century Arabic book called the Almanac of Health, an old man went to the doctor complaining of a frigid complexion and stiffness in winter. The doctor, after examining his condition, prescribed a rooster. Being a hot and dry bird it was the perfect tonic for a cold and rheumatic old man. This is medicine by the four humours. The idea that the body is a concoction of these four essential juices is one of the oldest on record. From the Ancient Greeks to the 19th century it explained disease, psychology, habit and personality. When we describe people as being choleric, sanguine or melancholic we are still using the language of the humours today. It also explains why, in the long and convoluted history of medical practice, pigeon livers were an aphrodisiac, blood letting was a form of heroism (and best done in spring) and why you really could be frightened to death. The theory was dismantled from the 17th century but in its belief that the mind and body are intimately connected and that health requires equilibrium the humours retain an influence to this dayWith David Wootton, Anniversary Professor of History at the University of York; Vivian Nutton, Professor of the History of Medicine at University College London; Noga Arikha, Visiting Fellow at the Institut Jean-Nicod in Paris
