A took at Artek, the most famous and prestigious of all the communist Pioneer camps of the Soviet Union. Situated on the Crimean shore of the Black Sea, Artek offered a kind of paradise for children with its swimming, abundant food, good health, singing and opportunities to meet young foreigners. Zinovy Zinik, who in the 50s dreamt of being selected to go to Artek, travels to the camp to see how it has survived in the wake of the Communism.
In 1985 Benedict Allen came across the Niowra people who lived in the remote lowland swamps of New Guinea. He considered it a privilege to undergo the brutal secret initiation ceremony to become Man as Strong as a Crocodile, it gave him an anthropologist's insight into the ways of Niowra as well as permanent scars. He relives his youthful experience with the aid of tapes recorded during his time among the Niowra.
