Elaine Griffiths who is leading a team of volunteers to restore St Francis of Gorton monastery in Manchester, after it was closed, stripped of its art works and vandalised, In addition to the restoration, the project entails converting the friary into a hotel and building a conference centre and other facilities intended to benefit the local community. Laurie Taylor is joined by social anthropologist Julia Lawton of Newnham College, Cambridge, who has spent 15 months in day care centres and in hospices observing the reality of these institutions. She has reached the conclusion that rather than "live until they die", many patients "rot away and die". In her new book The Dying Process, she argues that often patients "die" long before their bodies cease to function.
