The Miracle by ALEXANDER IRVINE
Read by Patrick Brannigan
'Poor folk like us were adept in the art of getting along on little, but living on nothing is something only fairies can accomplish.
It was a Wednesday morning. I was up early because a gnawing at the pit of my stomach would not permit me to sleep.
"Is there any hope today?" I asked mother, as I was about to start for work.
"Oh ay, dear," she said cheerfully.
"There's always the chance of a miracle.'"

British, and European, agriculture is a victim of its own success. Financial encouragement and technological advance have been embraced but the result today is that too much food is being produced and the cost of storing surpluses is getting out of hand. Bitter Harvest looks at the history behind the success story that's going wrong, discusses what can be done to correct the balance between supply and demand, and ponders the future for farmers.
