Launched in 1952, the SS Uganda was one of the last ocean-going liners to be built in the old tradition of style and elegance. Her brass fittings and teak decks gleamed as she sedately made her way along the East Africa run for the British India Steam
Navigation Company.
By the end of the 1960s the great era of sea travel was long over and the SS Uganda began a new life as a school ship on cruises around the Mediterranean.
Perhaps her finest hour came in 1982 when she was requisitioned by the Ministry of Defence to serve as a hospital ship in the Falklands conflict.
Ivan Howlett traces the history of the SS Uganda by starting with a visit to Cornwall and the empty hulk lying at anchor in the quiet River Fal.
