Ralph Bird 's River Boat Race The racing of 100-year-old six-oared pilot gigs has long been a feature in Newquay and the Isles of Scilly.
Ralph Bird , a Cornish boat builder, had a dream of such races taking place on the River Fal. Six years ago, with the help of Newquay Rowing Club, that dream became reality.
Christopher Jones was at last year's race and talked to Ralph Bird , the rowers, and the students who helped to make history by building the first pilot gig ever constructed in Falmouth.
