Second of two programmes Dr Conor Cruise O'Brien has spent much of his life writing about Ireland and has been actively involved in Irish politics. Presently he is a Fellow at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire, where he is lecturing on ' The Age of Enlightenment'.

In 1901 Dr Edward Wilson sailed for the Antarctic on Discovery as ship's doctor. During the three-year voyage he kept a diary.
'Monday 21 October: We saw our first penguins. We are well down south now, nearly 45'S lat and we are carefully on the lookout for icebergs in this mist....
Stowing medical things again in the afternoon. Found a case of 16 bottles of chloroform and ether knocking about on the mess deck, unlocked.'
