'The South Wales miners are different because they are a sort of secret society, working in an Industry that outsiders often find both terrifying and mysterious.'
So argues Patrick Hannan, who takes a look at the history of the coalfield. There are graphic accounts of life early this century from the South Wales Miners' Library, miners' ballads and the voices of Arthur Horner, James Griffiths and Will Paynter.
