What causes cancer? This remains a mystery, despite decades of effort by scientists. The reason may well be that cancer does not have a single cause, but instead there has to be a sequence of causes, a series of breakdowns in the normal working of the body before cancer finally results.

Highlands, where cows suffer from an ' epidemic ' of cancer, give a handle to study how various factors in the environment can interact to produce cancer.
