He's home at 5.20 on the dot. A kiss from the wife as he goes indoors. A meal is waiting. Then a spot of weeding in an immaculate garden, then television. A nice cosy, ripple-free routine.
'Tomorrow, someone will declare war on that routine. Her combat-dress will be an indecently split-skirt, a tight sweater, and no bra.'

John Buchan was very well-known for his public life - best-selling author, Member of Parliament, successful Governor General of Canada - but he was an intensely private man, devoting only a few pages of his autobiography to his family. All his life, however, he harked back to his childhood holidays spent in the Scottish Border country, and always regarded himself as a Borderer, although he never owned a house there.
In this programme Hugh Douglas demonstrates the importance which that part of the country had for John Buchan, and shows that he was not the only talented member of that generation of his family - or, indeed, its only best-selling author.
