Six programmes in which writers and travellers consider the pleasures and perils of their journeys.
1: The Nile Canoe Expedition
' Not ever having seen anything like it, there was no way of appreciating emotionally the large volume of water which poured down that river. It was very large and very fast. On an English river which flows fairly fast. there are often little breakouts and places where you can nose your way to the bank and rest. But for long stretches here there was no respite.'
On 3 October 1978 eight young men set out on one of the longest canoe journeys ever made. Their aim was to canoe 3,000 miles from Nimule on the Ugandan border to Rosetta on the Mediterranean. It took four months and they succeeded against terrific odds.
