Delays in bringing cases before the courts and the length of proceedings once they get there are perhaps the most frequently heard of all complaints about the law. But how serious is the problem? Is it due to lawyers' incompetence or a shortage of judges and courts? And can anything be done about it?
In the second of four programmes, Hugo Young discusses delays in both civil and criminal hearings with judges, barristers, solicitors and observers of our legal system.

Blazars and Quasars Presenter Geoff Watts
In 1929, astronomers observing the constellation of the Lizard found a strange star that varied considerably in brightness. Forty years passed before detailed measurements could show how peculiar this behaviour is, for from an object no larger than the solar system comes an energy outpouring equal to that of ten billion suns.
What are these objects that astronomers have christened 'B L Lacs ' - the Blazars? What generates their massive energy? Are they related to those other bizarre celestial creations, the quasars? GEOFF WATTS seeks answers from Professor Martin Rees and Dr Cyril Hazard of the Institute of Astronomy at Cambridge. Producer DAVID PATERSON

Watch the Forest Grow by KEN WHITMORE
' Look at the forest. It's marvellous. All the young trees growing. Grass covering the slagheaps. They look like mountains. It's wonderful, planting a forest when all of the rest of the world's blowing itself to bits. There's rabbits already and moles. There could be deer. Picture the scene, there could be deer browsing in the middle of Hanley in our lifetime.'
