Anything But Love by MICHAEL JUDGE with Pauline Delany Donal McCann and Kevin McHugh
' Sometimes he'd stand for hours at the back of the hall, watching all the motts go by, and he'd be afraid to ask one of them to dance. Sometimes I used to have to go and ask a girl to dance with him. Would you like to have the pleasure of this dance ... with my friend? They used to think I was some sort of a nut.'

.' In my head I have some big plans besides Siegfried - three dramas, with a three-act prelude. If all the German theatres tumble down I will erect a new one on the banks of the Rhine, call people together and produce the whole in the course of a week.
Richard Wagner , writing in 1851. Twenty-five years later the operas were finished, the new theatre had been erected, not on the banks of the Rhine but in an obscure Bavarian town called Bayreuth, and the first complete cycle of The Ring of the Nibelungs had been produced.
The Bayreuth Festival has become a great musical event which this year celebrates its centenary. To mark the occasion this programme tells the story of Wagner's struggle to make his dream come true. Narrator Denys Hawthorne
