Dr William Sargant , recently retired, talks to TONY VAN DEN BERGH about the medical experiences which have made him one of the most controversial figures in the medical profession.
Early in his career as a young and enthusiastic doctor, Will Sargant worked in various mental hospitals. The condition of the inmates horrified him; and from these experiences, backed by his psychiatric training, has come the conviction that mental illness can be treated physically, by brain surgery such as leucotomy and by the use of newly discovered drugs.
Over the years his methods have attracted much attention and argument, but DR WILLIAM SARGANT remains convinced and unrepentant.
