This last summer I went back to Townside. In Oxford I'm haunted by Townside and the bogys of the half-finished, abandoned, rusting hulks in the shipyards. It was only the memory of a floppy hat struggling up Reservoir Hill against the smoke sky of Newcastle in the distance that brought me back at all.'
