In the summer of 1832 a young Army private called Alexander Somerville wrote a letter to a newspaper on a matter of conscience. The consequences for Somerville were sudden and terrible. He was placed under arrest, court-martialled and flogged.
Years later Somerville wrote his own account of what happened then and afterwards in his book The Autobiography of a Working Man. with Henry Stamper as Alexander Somerville
