Thomas Barman. until recently the BBC's Diplomatic Correspondent and before that a foreign correspondent for The Times, spent the last two years of the war as a member of the British Embassy's staff in Moscow. There he watched the curious and often uneasy diplomatic game as the Allies began to win the ' hot ' war and to prepare for the ' cold ' war that was to follow.
