Investigation of the Criminal - not the Crime.
[Starring] Stratford Johns as Det. Chief Supt. Barlow, Garfield Morgan as Det.-Chief Insp. Lewis, Dan Meaden as Det.-Con. Box

A gang of 'jelly merchants' are at work, blasting safes with cool expertise and rewarding results. When the fourth robbery in swift succession nets £3,000 from an egg-packing station, an angry Barlow notes the sum total of Crime' Squad, knowledge: "It's the same team. The pattern's the same - entering at a window or through the roof, a blowing job with electric dets wired to the light switch, all at places where money is kept at night but no nightwatchman on the premises. And then they're away - no dabs, not a sausage."

Barlow and Gwyn Lewis can only fall back on supposition. It seems likely that the gang numbers three: "A jelly man to blow the safes, a minder in case they get disturbed, and a driver probably doubling as a break in merchant." There is also the coincidence that several fast cars have been stolen from Birmingham and found abandoned with false number-plates and between a hundred and a hundred and fifty miles on the clock - roughly the round trip distance between Birmingham and the places robbed.

Not much to go on - but enough for the net to start closing in on a clever gang whose blind spot is doing every job in the same way. And unknown to Barlow, fate is on his side. A cigarette end suggests that one of the gang could be a woman - and in this story by Allan Prior the eternal triangle is as explosive as a stick of dynamite.
